Baddeck`s geographical positioning makes for a series of micro climates ranging between zones 5 - 7 for the most part, lending the area to a wide choice of horticultural opportunities. Enjoy a walk along the boardwalk on Water Street and you`ll discover beautiful yards that are home to perennials, annuals, shrubs, veggie gardens etc. Our favourite is right on the corner of Twining & Water Street, and boasts a fine Star Magnolia that is one of the first trees to bloom in the village. Lovely!

What we`re getting at, of course, is that this lovely part of the world is blessed with fresh air, clean water and an abundance of deciduous and evergreen trees. The soil is a challenge - heavy clay! Gardeners will appreciate the addition of a loaded soil recipe required to yield results.

At the Baddeck Heritage House, we are gardening lovers but by no means experts. Liz is a novice chrysanthemum grower and hopes to display some nice disbud specimens, `Billy Bell` being a favourite, in the Fall. The grounds are also home to birds : woodpeckers, starlings, jays, crows and hummingbirds to name a few.

In a nutshell, we love this country, we respect the environment and are doing our bit to keep it green. Our laundry is done using cold water; we recycle according to the program in place in the village; we try to buy products that are grown or crafted locally. For example, the soap in the guestrooms is handmade by `Sweet Biscuit` in Sydney (www.sweetbiscuit.ca) and has proven to be very popular with our guests.
